Manila Layover Guide: Newport in Two Hours, Mall of Asia in Four, Intramuros in Six

A Manila layover divides cleanly by hours. Under two hours of free time you stay in the terminal. Two to four, you cross the bridge to Newport. Four to six, you can see Manila Bay and the biggest mall in the country. Six to ten, you can stand inside the Spanish walled city and be back for the flight. This guide sets out each tier with the hours, the fares and the entry rules, for a Terminal 3 layover first because that is where most international transfers happen.

Before you leave the terminal

Most nationalities enter the Philippines visa-free for 30 days with an onward ticket; nationals who need a visa cannot leave the sterile area and should use the lounges and the Wings Transit Hotel instead (lounges, day rooms). Fill in the eTravel declaration within 72 hours before landing, clear immigration and customs, and note the time: for an international departure you want to be back at the check-in counter three hours ahead, and the airline’s bag drop cut-off is the deadline that counts. If both flights are at Terminal 3 the return is a walk; if the second flight is at Terminal 1 or 2, add the hourly free inter-terminal shuttle to the sum.

Two to four hours: Newport World Resorts

Cross Runway Manila, the 220-metre air-conditioned bridge from the Terminal 3 arrivals level, and you are in Newport Mall in five minutes: shops, a food hall, restaurants from Filipino to Korean, a cinema, and the Newport Performing Arts Theatre for an evening show. The Newport Grand Wing casino is 24 hours and adults only. The hotel restaurants are the better meal: Man Ho and CRU at the Marriott, Oori Korean barbecue at the Sheraton, Kusina and Hua Yuan at the Hilton, Yamazato and Yawaragi at the Okura, Rooftop 11 at the Belmont for a drink over the runway. For a swim and a shower, book a room at the Savoy or the Belmont from 2:00 pm; none of the hotels sells a published day rate, so a one-night booking is the way in. Everything is under cover, which in rainy season or 35-degree heat is the point.

Four to six hours: the bay and the mall

The PAF Aerospace Museum at Villamor Air Base, 900 m from the Hilton, is a 45-minute stop for aircraft enthusiasts. SM Mall of Asia, 6 km away (Grab ₱250 to ₱350, 15 to 25 minutes), is one of the largest malls in the world with an IMAX, an ice rink, a seaside promenade with the Manila Bay sunset at around 6 pm, and the MOA Eye ferris wheel; the SMX Convention Center and the Mall of Asia Arena are next to it. Entertainment City on the reclamation beyond it has the three integrated resorts, City of Dreams (home of the Nobu Hotel Manila), Okada Manila with its fountain show, and Solaire, each with restaurants and casinos. Allow 45 minutes each way for the return in the evening rush.

Six to ten hours: Intramuros and the museums

Intramuros, the 16th-century Spanish walled city, is 12 km north (Grab ₱300 to ₱450, 30 to 50 minutes): Fort Santiago, San Agustin Church, the Manila Cathedral, the walls and a bamboo-bicycle or calesa tour. Across the road are the National Museum of Fine Arts and the National Museum of Natural History (free, closed Mondays) and Rizal Park. Three hours on the ground is enough for the highlights; budget an hour each way and leave Intramuros no later than four hours before an international departure, because the road back passes through the worst of Manila’s traffic.

Overnight layovers

An evening arrival and a morning departure is the easiest layover of all: sleep in Newport, eat at the mall or a hotel restaurant, and walk back across the bridge, which is open all night; our sleeping guide compares the hotels with the in-terminal capsules. Families should read the family friendly hotels guide, and anyone travelling between June and November the typhoon season guide.

From Terminals 1 and 2

Newport is a drive, not a walk, from these terminals (15 to 25 minutes by Grab), so for a short layover Entertainment City and Mall of Asia, both about 3 km away, are the closer outings, and the Nobu Hotel at City of Dreams the closer room. The free inter-terminal shuttle to Terminal 3 is for passengers with an onward boarding pass; the UBE Loop (4 am to 8 pm) is for everyone.

How much time do I need?
